Meeting held at Big Woods Lake Rotary Prairie Preserve with unseasonably cool temperatures!
Announcements:
President Joe thanked everyone for their support during his year as Club President. He acknowledged in particular the board, the committees, and Erv Dennis (Club Secretary) and Steve Lindaman (Club Treasurer).
Bob Dieter was Wheel Spinner
Our speaker was Marv Diemer, chair of the Prairie committee. He noted that back in 2001, when Jim Kenyon was chair of local projects, he and Marv, along with Mark Ripplinger and Daryl Smith, got together and decided they wanted to try and make a prairie out of an overgrown space near Big Woods Lake. They put together a project proposal and submitted it to Cedar Falls Rotary with a request for $15,000 for prairie seed.
Marv thanked all of his committee members, as well as Marcia Hagge and Steve Boeke, for their work in cleaning up the area and helping to keep it maintained.
In 2007, it was decided that informational boards about the prairie were needed. The flood of 2008 disrupted the installation of these signs, but they are now finished and ready to be installed. Marv noted that Cedar Falls Rotary has given this community a prairie park; there is nothing else like it in this area. Part of the beauty of the prairie is that it changes from month to month and it never looks exactly the same. He urged everyone to come out and enjoy it.
Jim McCutcheon then led a tour to the Rotary kiosk located about ninety yards from the parking area.
